Vicariate for Faith & Mission Update (August 2024)

August 1 2024

Update from the Vicariate

What is the Lord calling us to Be and Do?

Over the last six weeks people across the Diocese have been undertaking spiritual conversations discerning What is God calling us to Be and Do? Workshops have taken place in Stockton, Consett and Washington with plans in place for Hexham and Amble. With further modelling of spiritual conversations taking place at Ushaw and with the Diocesan Lay Pastoral Forum. The discernment workshops will continue into the Autumn term with a number of Partnerships now inviting training into their area. In Rome the latest document for the universal synod has been released aimed at those who will be attending the meeting in October 2025. A link to this document can be found here: https://www.synod.va/en/news/the-instrumentum-laboris.html.

We continue to pray and unpack the draft Diocesan vision, exploring what is God calling us to Be and Do in our community?

Catholic Pastoral Leadership

One of the commitments in our Diocesan vision is, ‘Forming and Developing People for Mission’. It is central to our faith that we all recognise our own calling and giftedness and that we step up to continue to learn, grow and give. Over the last year I have been working with colleagues across the country and Liverpool Hope University to co-design a formation programme that provides a strong foundation for people involved in ministry in the Church. This new online course in Catholic Pastoral Leadership is designed for those who are involved or who want to be involved in parish ministry. It will cover key teaching of the Church and an exploration of how this teaching is applied to today and our own parish reality. This two-year course is offered at two levels – as personal formation or as a postgraduate certificate (60 credits). It is designed to be studied in your own home, mainly at a time that suits yourself. To find out more please get in touch via adminfaith.mission@diocesehn.org.uk.

Year of Prayer 2024

Prayer unites us; it makes us brothers and sisters. It is in prayer that our hearts find the strength not to be cold and insensitive in the face of injustice. In prayer, God keeps calling us, opening our hearts to charity.” Pope Francis.

In preparation for the 2025 Jubilee Year ‘Pilgrims of Hope’, 2024 has been designated a Year of Prayer by Pope Francis.

Please visit our Diocesan Year of Prayer webpage for more information and regular updates.

Symphony of prayer and praise: A prayer for the Year of Prayer [CAFOD]

God of blessings,
in this year ahead,
give us a spirit of listening,
of openness to your word
and longing for your kingdom.

As we journey toward the Jubilee,
a time of new beginnings,
we pray for help and strength,
to heal our relationships with each other
and all creation.

Sing your song of love over us,
renewing our faith and courage,
so we may join our voices together,
discovering new harmonies of hope,
new melodies of reconciliation

Attentive to the Spirit,
and awake to the needs of the world,
may we seek your life-giving presence,
as we join as one global family,
in a great symphony of prayer and praise.

Amen.

We Dare to Say: A resource for faith-sharing groups on the Lord’s Prayer

We Dare To Say is a resource for small group faith-sharing and for individual meditation, featuring five sessions each based on a line from the Lord’s Prayer. Each session includes scripture, prayers and a reflection with questions. The connection of the Our Father with the sacraments and the devotional life is explored, and wisdom from the saints is offered for the spiritual growth of group participants and individuals alike.

Northern Saint Feast Days

St Oswald, King, Martyr – c. 604 – 642

Feast Day – 3 August

Oswald was the son of King Ethelfrith of Northumbria. When his father was killed in battle, he fled to Scotland and was baptised at Iona. Returning in 633, he reclaimed his kingdom by defeating Cadwalla at Heavenfield, near Hexham. His zeal to evangelise his people led him to seek the help of the Ionian Community, who sent Bishop Aidan to him c.635. Oswald gave him the island of Lindisfarne, on which he fixed his See. The king took an active part in the work of evangelisation, often travelling with Aidan and even translating his sermons from the Celtic tongue. Oswald also helped to establish a monastery at Melrose, where St Cuthbert was to embrace the monastic life. In 642, Oswald was killed in battle against the pagan forces of Penda, king of Mercia. Venerated as a martyr, he quickly became one of the most revered saints in northern England.

St Aidan, Bishop – Died 651

Feast Day – 31 August

Born in Ireland, Aidan died at Bamburgh in 651. A monk of Iona, he was sent to Northumbria when King Oswald asked for help in converting his kingdom, and established his monastery on the island of Lindisfarne. Assisted by King Oswald, and later by King Oswin, Aidan preached the Gospel, founded churches and monasteries, and liberated slaves throughout the kingdom. Since the testimony of Bede, he has been venerated for his simplicity and poverty, for his love of prayer and the scriptures, and for his care of the sick and the poor.

With him are also remembered all those holy abbots and bishops, teachers and missionaries who made Lindisfarne a cradle of English Christianity.

Spiritual Accompaniment

Exploring Spiritual Accompaniment

Spiritual Accompaniment has been part of the Christian tradition and a ministry in the Church since the days of the early Church. It is often called Spiritual Direction, although we prefer the term ‘accompaniment’ because it suggests walking alongside someone in their spiritual/faith journey, rather than telling them what to do!

Spiritual Accompaniment is not about solving problems so much as exploring our relationship with God, through prayer and reflection on our experience of faith and life.

A Spiritual Director is not there to give advice or tell you what to believe in, but rather to listen attentively and act as a ‘sounding board’ for whatever you bring to the session.

Spiritual Accompaniment sessions usually take place every couple of months or so, depending on the circumstances of the individuals involved.

Maybe you feel called to this ministry or know someone who might be interested. St Antony’s Priory in Durham offers training. Sr Sheila McNamara RSCJ, the Diocesan Lead on Spiritual Accompaniment, is part of the training team for the two-year course.

Training in Spiritual Accompaniment

Exploring Spiritual Accompaniment’ is a two-year programme of formation that provides both an opportunity for personal spiritual development, as well as offering practical and experiential training in the skills applicable to accompanying others on their faith journey.

Our approach to Spiritual Accompaniment is ecumenical, drawing on a broad range of Christian wisdom and spirituality, as well as being informed by the Guidelines for Spiritual Directors, published by the Retreat Association.

A key principle undergirding the course is that it should be congruous with the process of spiritual accompaniment itself. Rather than simply being a programme of training in skills or knowledge, it should also be seen as a process of discernment and formation in the charism of this distinctive ministry.

The course will comprise eight modules taught over two academic years. Each module will include a significant element of self-directed learning. This will provide an opportunity to reflect on matters considered between sessions, as well as enabling a focus on the development of listening skills and the practice of accompaniment.

The course has vastly exceeded my expectations on every level. The depth and spread of topics covered, the reading and the materials (physical and online) and individual and group experiential aspects have all been extremely rich and stretching.

Please see St Antony’s website – Spiritual Direction section – for more information or email Sr Sheila: sheila.mcnamara@diocesehn.org.uk.
