Vicariate for Education Update (March 2024)

March 1 2024

Catholic School Inspections (CSI)

There is a full programme of inspections this academic year. Following the summary of recommendations from the Education Select Committee, the inspectorate would like to assure schools and their communities that, ‘Inspection is an act of service, not of power and is an expression of the commitment of all of us to ensuring the best education possible for the pupils in our Catholic schools. We are deeply aware of how crucial Catholic school leaders are to the educational mission of the Church and inspection should always support and not hinder this apostolate.

Prayer and Liturgy Directory

The Prayer and Liturgy Directory, ‘To love You more dearly’, was released in 2023, the directory offers guidance for the celebration of prayer and liturgy in schools in England and Wales. It draws on a range of Church documents to establish principles and good practice and applies them to a particular aspect of Church life, and it is a companion volume to the RE directory ‘To know You more clearly’ and the forthcoming Catholic life and mission directory ‘To follow You more nearly’.

We are delighted that Father Adrian Dixon will be delivering training to key school staff in May to support our them with the implementation of this directory.

Year of Prayer

In preparation for the 2025 Jubilee Year, ‘Pilgrims of Hope‘, this year has been designated a Year of Prayer by Pope Francis. We are encouraged to reflect on their life of prayer: what we pray, how we pray, and why we pray. This is for two reasons:

  • To encourage us to go deeper in their commitment to pray, and in our love of God.
  • To think about how we might accompany someone else to pray during this coming Year of Prayer.

The Diocesan Department for Education will be providing schools with resources to support this initiative.
