Bishop’s Day

The Diocesan Department for Education were delighted to facilitate their first Bishop’s Day at the beginning of June. Bishop Stephen invited all school and Catholic Education Trust leaders to join him and the education department in Durham.

The day began with Bishop Stephen sharing his vision for the Diocese. The education department then delivered key updates relating to Catholic School Inspection, the Religious Education Directory and the Prayer and Liturgy Directory. Sharon Matthews from CAFOD shared some exciting new resources and developments taking place that all schools can access. Oonagh Atkinson spoke to delegates about the work of The Road Centre and the much-needed counselling and mental health services that it provides. This was followed by Tony Lawless who gave invaluable updates about the long running and much enjoyed primary festivals. Tony also used the opportunity to share with all delegates the fabulous work that the Youth Ministry undertakes for all children in our Catholic schools. It was incredible to hear that the team was established 30 years ago at the request of Bishop Ambrose to answer the call of the Second Vatican Council.

The morning was completed with Mass celebrated by Bishop Stephen and Canon Simon Lerche, the Episcopal Vicar for Education. We were delighted to be joined by members of our school communities who are retiring. Bishop Stephen thanked them for their service and presented them with an episcopal blessing. We were particularly grateful to staff and pupils from English Martyrs Catholic School and Sixth Form College, who led the music superbly during the Mass.

All those who attended enjoyed the opportunity to meet as a Diocesan family of schools.
