Please read the latest update from the SVP about the work they do in our Diocese.
Plans are in full swing for the Tyne Central Council SVP festival event at Ushaw College on Saturday 31 May, starting at 10.00am and ending with Mass celebrated by Bishop Stephen at 1.45pm. All SVP members, staff and volunteers are invited to attend this free event, as are Diocesan clergy and Caritas partner members. It is a perfect opportunity to join together as Pilgrims of Hope in this Jubilee Year to share and celebrate the work of the SVP and its Caritas Diocesan partners. If you have not yet registered your place, but would like to attend, contact Deacon Patrick Rutherford on patrickr@svp.org.uk or 07557 562 715.
This year, the SVP launched its first public facing Lent appeal: ‘Keep the Doors of Hope open this Lent.’ The appeal, which ran until Sunday 27 April, highlighted the SVP’s support for asylum seekers and refugees and so aligned with the Social Policy and Young Vincentian campaigns running at the same time. Nearly £26,000 (including gift aid) has been raised through this appeal. These funds will help enable the SVP to continue offering support to those most in need in our communities.
All are encouraged to continue to support these campaigns by urging their MP to push to maintain the trial 56 day ‘move-on’ period for newly recognised refugees than runs out in June, so helping to avoid refugee homelessness. In the past, those granted refugee status have been given as little as 7 days. Follow this link (https://act.svp.org.uk/page/166439/action/1) to access an easy way to generate and send an email to your MP.
