The Emerald Isle came to Newcastle when one primary school celebrated St Patrick’s Day, along with the culture and heritage of its Irish headteacher. Pupils and staff at St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School, which is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust, came to school dressed in green to commemorate Ireland’s patron saint, while the children took part in themed activities throughout the day.
Headteacher Lisa Hoey, who is from Drogheda, Country Louth, on the east coast of Ireland, said: “The children learned about St Patrick, made shamrocks, made posters about St Patrick and made St Patrick’s Day hats. The whole school was invited to wear green and to join me in celebrating my traditions and culture being Irish.”
