St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Stanley, one of 47 schools in the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust, marked a very special occasion this week with the official opening of its new prayer garden — a peaceful space designed for quiet reflection, prayer, and stillness.
The event was attended by members of the local community, including representatives from Stanley Town Council, PACT House, parents, carers, governors and friends of the school. The garden was blessed by Father Shaun Purdy, whose thoughtful words reminded the community of their duty to care for the world around us.
Headteacher, Mrs Mary Urwin, described it as “a truly special moment for our school community,” and thanked all those who contributed to the project or joined in the celebration. “We feel incredibly lucky to have such a supportive school community. The generosity, time, and care shown by so many people has made this garden possible.”
The prayer garden will be a lasting space where children can take time to reflect, pray, and enjoy moments of calm in their busy school days. It is already being warmly welcomed as a treasured addition to school life.
