The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) wish to highlight the importance of the sanctity of life during the General Election campaign period and have shared the following information for consideration:

Recent Government figures reveal a troubling increase in the number of abortions taking place: 252,122 in England and Wales and 18,207 in Scotland in 2022. Despite the staggering scale of this loss of life and the wider consequences for our society, the Catholic Church is almost alone as a major cultural force in recognising the gravity of the deliberate destruction of innocent human life.

SPUC is dedicated to supporting the efforts of the Church in promoting the inherent worth of all human life. During the campaign for the General Election, citizens inevitably consider the values they wish for in their society and we have therefore created resources to enable the importance of pro-life issues to be raised with Parliamentary candidates. We do this in a way which respects the right of voters to hold their own political views on prudential matters.

Recently, the threat of home-induced abortion being decriminalised up to birth was narrowly avoided, but it is almost certain that similar proposals will return in the coming session of Parliament. Similarly, there is growing momentum for legislation to permit assisted suicide.

For these reasons, SPUC has launched a campaign to encourage voters to protect the most vulnerable members of our society. We have created advanced tools to support this initiative, which can be accessed at www.spuc.org.uk/valueyourvote.
