A proposed amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill is a very serious threat against the ‘Culture of Life’, so say the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC).

As you may be aware, we are facing one of the biggest dangers to the unborn in years, in the shape of a proposed amendment to decriminalise abortion.

On Tuesday 28 November 2023, Labour MPs Dame Diana Johnson and Stella Creasy tabled amendments NC1 and NC2 respectively to the Government’s Criminal Justice Bill. Both amendments would decriminalise abortion.

On 25 January 2024, these amendments were debated at Committee stage and withdrawn. Now, Diana Johnson MP has tabled a very similar amendment (New Clause 1), in the hope that it will be debated by MPs at Report stage. The earliest this can happen is 19 February, but expected in early March.

This amendment seeks to change criminal law, so that “no offence is committed by a woman acting in relation to her own pregnancy” at any gestation. This means that a woman who induced her abortion at home using pills (or any other method) at any stage of pregnancy, including just before natural birth, would not commit a crime.

The main action we are taking at SPUC is encouraging people to write to their MPs, and providing the resources to help them do this. On our website, we have briefings to help people write physical letters, as well as an easy to use webtool.
