As the coronation of King Charles III approaches on Saturday 6 May 2023, the Diocese of Hexham & Newcastle is preparing to unite in prayer and support for the royal family.
On Friday 5 May 2023, a Diocesan Mass will take place at St Mary’s Cathedral at 12.05pm. All are most welcome to attend and join in prayer ahead of the momentous occasion. Following the coronation, a Thanksgiving Mass will take place on Sunday 7 May 2023 at 11.30am Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral. This Mass will be offered in thanksgiving for the Coronation, with the Prayer for the King to be recited and the National Anthem sung.
The Bishops of England and Wales, led by Cardinal Nichols, President of the Bishops’ Conference, have encouraged Catholics to pray for King Charles and Queen Camilla during a triduum of prayer from 3 to 5 May. This marks the first coronation in the United Kingdom in 70 years, following the late Queen Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne in 1953.
In a statement, Cardinal Nichols reflected on the immense responsibilities and challenges that King Charles III will face, as he and Queen Camilla step into their roles as monarchs. He said, “None of us can imagine the incredible burden that His Majesty will assume as he is crowned King alongside his wife and Queen, Camilla. The world has immeasurably changed since 1953, with many more opportunities and challenges in the lives of all.”
During these three days of prayer, Catholics are invited to ask Almighty God to guide King Charles in his appointed tasks. They are encouraged to download and pray for King Charles when they gather for Mass, uniting in support of the new monarch.
As the Catholic Diocese of Hexham & Newcastle comes together in prayer and celebration, they eagerly anticipate the new chapter in the United Kingdom’s history, as King Charles III and Queen Camilla begin their reign.
