In last month’s newsletter we bade farewell to Sara Harris as Justice and Peace Refugee Project Co-ordinator. This month we are delighted to report that, following recent recruitment interviews, we have been able to appoint Azad Hasan as her successor. Azad has an in-depth knowledge of the project and its clients having previously held the Project Worker role. We welcome Azad to his new position and are confident that his co-ordination of the project, along with the sterling work of our volunteers, will help ensure that we continue to meet the basic needs of some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

We continue to see an increasing number of people using our services, so your donations of food, toiletries and finance are even more in demand. We particularly need toothbrushes, toothpaste, shower gels, deodorants, shampoo, conditioners and washing powders as well as cooking oil, coffee and chickpeas. The full list of items required is available here.

In July we were bowled over by the generosity of schools in the Diocese who were asked by the Youth Ministry Team (YMT) to bring donations of items to the various festivals held recently at the Emmaus Youth Village. This is an appeal that had been co-ordinated by YMT for several years prior to the pandemic and it was so encouraging to see it taking place again. Primary schools were asked to bring along food items while secondary school pupils donated toiletries – and the response was brilliant!

We are hugely grateful to YMT, to the schools and their families, and to the volunteers who transported the ‘hoard of goodies’ back to the project. This is yet another example of how a co-ordinated effort and heaps of good will can result in amazing results.
