We join with other organisations to pray for peace across the world. We pray for wherever there is conflict and look with horror on the developing crisis in Israel and Palestine.

Save the Date:

The AGM of the Justice and Peace Co-ordinating Council will be held on Saturday 13 January 2024. We will be joined by Sir John Battle who was a Labour party Member of Parliament for 1987 to 2010. A committed Catholic, John frequently speaks on issues around Catholic Social Teaching and is chair of the Justice and Peace Commission for Leeds Diocese. He will be speaking to us about integrity in public life. We will be having the meeting in Newcastle (venue to be confirmed) and the day will last from 10.30am to 3.30pm.

Prayer Vigil at Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre (DIRC)

Many of you will be aware that the Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre is to be expanded to detain men. The Justice and Peace Co-ordinating Council believes the current process for claiming asylum is broken and we need a fairer system that is fit for purpose. Detaining people, with no time limit is, we feel, an inhuman way of dealing with people who are seeking sanctuary.

The prayer vigils will continue at 3.00pm on the first Sunday of the month at the barrier to the detention centre in Medomsley. The next one will be on Sunday 5 November at 3.00pm. The purpose is to pray for those detained there, to stand in solidarity with them and to witness by our presence that their detention is inhumane, unjust and incompatible with our faith which calls us to recognise the unique dignity of each person. All are welcome to come along from 3.00 – 3.45pm for a short prayer service which incorporates a time of silence.

The postcode for the Centre on Corbridge Road, Medomsley is DH8 6QY. If you are unable to join in person, please join in prayer from home at 3.00pm. Future dates planned include; Sundays 5 November and 3 December.

Go to the Justice and Peace webpage on the Diocesan website where you will find more details, including an online version of the prayer vigil or email: lizarchibald.justiceandpeace@gmail.com.
