One in five scoops at least one grade 7 or above
All their hard work has paid off for the students at a Sunderland school with 80% achieving five or more GCSEs at grade 4 and above including English and maths. St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, is celebrating its GCSE results which include 10% of all grades at level 8 or 9 and one in five students achieving at least one grade 7 or above.
Marie Chape is “so happy” to have achieved five grade 9s, three grade 8s, one grade 7 and two grade 6s adding: “Bring on Sixth Form!”
Zarah Islam, who achieved a D*, two grade 9s, four grade 8s, three grade 7s and one grade 6, said: “I’ve achieved further than the stars and I am over the moon. I’m so excited for Sixth Form.”
Also thrilled with her results is 16-year-old Maya Hughes, who achieved four grade 9s, five grade 8s, one grade 7 and one grade 6. She said: “I feel so happy with my results. The hard work has paid off.”
Poppy Smith, who achieved a D2, three grade 9s, six grade 8s and one grade 6, said: “I’ve worked so hard for these results and I’m delighted with them. I can’t wait for Sixth Form.”
Head of school Marie Lanaghan said: “We are delighted with our GCSE results this year. Our students have worked incredibly hard and shown great resilience, and we are so proud of what they have achieved. This success is also testament to the hard work, support and encouragement from our team of dedicated staff. We could not be more proud.”
Nationally, GCSE results have fallen for a second year running with 68.2% of all grades marked at grades 4 and above. The fall in passes is due to England’s plan to bring grades back down after a spike in top results during the Covid pandemic.
In England, GCSEs are now graded using a numerical system from 9 – 1 rather than A – E. Students need a grade 4 for a “strong pass”.
