Fiona Usher, Principal Chaplain with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and Chaplain Team Leader with Northumbrian Industrial Mission, explains:

“International Firefighters’ Memorial Day takes place on 4th May. Each year, I see firefighters – if not out on a call – stand at the front of their stations at 12 noon, observing a minute’s silence in memory of colleagues across the world who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

“This year, it would be wonderful if members of your church or community could stand alongside your local fire crews at 12 noon, joining in that shared moment of remembrance.

“Afterwards, a simple gesture – a word of thanks, a card, or even a packet of biscuits – can mean a great deal. These small acts speak powerfully of support, encouragement and appreciation for all that firefighters give in service to others.

“If crews are called away and the station is empty, you may wish to keep the silence on their behalf – holding them, their colleagues and their families in your thoughts or prayers.

“If you are able to attend, please email nimchaplaincy@gmail.com so the relevant station can be advised and if appropriate permissions are given, any photos shared afterwards would be warmly received and passed on to their Communications Team, helping to show how our churches and faith communities stand alongside those who serve.

“Thank you for helping to ensure that this day is marked with the recognition and support it deserves.”
