In order to celebrate and commemorate the Jubilee Year 2025, Pilgrims of Hope, CAFOD commissioned an icon from artist Mulugeta Araya in Ethiopia, for the Catholic Church in England and Wales. The Jubilee icon is currently on tour around the dioceses.
The Diocese of Hexham & Newcastle has been delighted to host the CAFOD Jubilee icon where it has been visiting our Jubilee Churches for the Feasts of St Joseph and St Cuthbert. Sister Michael Lee gave a beautiful talk on iconography, emphasising how icons are “written” with spiritual depth using colour and various attributes of significance. The Jubilee icon is also visiting the Diocesan offices for the School Chaplains’ meeting. We thank Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust for bringing the icon from Flame to our Diocese, and for displaying it at their Leadership Conference.
