Fr Cornelius O’Connor RIP

It is with great sadness that we have to inform you of the death of Fr Cornelius O’Connor who died on Wednesday 10 July 2024, aged 79.

Please pray for the repose of his soul.

Fr Cornelius’ body will be received into St Charles Church, Gosforth on Wednesday 31 July with Mass at 6.30pm. As Bishop Stephen will be away with the Diocesan Pilgrimage in Lourdes, Bishop Seamus will celebrate the Requiem Mass at 12.00 noon on Thursday 1 August at St Charles this will be followed by burial at Hollywood Avenue Cemetery, Gosforth.

May he rest in peace.

Death Notice

Fr Cornelius O’Connor, born 25 December 1944, died on 10 July 2024; he was 79 years of age.

Fr Cornelius was ordained to the priesthood on 7 June 1969. He has faithfully served the people of our Diocese in the following parishes:

Curate:

Willington Quay: Our Lady & St Aidan, July 1969 – November 1978
Consett: St Patrick, November 1978 – September 1983
Fenham: St Robert, September 1983 – September 1986

Parish Priest:

Bedlington: St Bede, September 1986 – April 1998
Sunderland: St Aidan, April 1998 – December 2003
Gosforth: St Charles, January 2004 – September 2017
Lanchester: All Saints and Annfield Plain: St Teresa, September 2017 – March 2023

Retired:

Newcastle: St Joseph, March 2023 – July 2024
