The new MA in Catholic Theology by Distance Learning led by the Centre for Catholic Studies (CCS) and the Department of Theology & Religion at Durham University. The programme is distinctive because it is both academically rigorous, but highly flexible; students can work through material at their own pace, studying equally well in any time zone and in many different life situations, alongside work, ministry, family or caring obligations.
New for October 2023: It is now possible to enrol for a Postgraduate Certificate or a Postgraduate Diploma as well as the full MA. We want to be as flexible as possible, and to enable people to test the waters cautiously, we are also offering the core module, ‘Catholic Theology: A Preliminary Tour’, as a stand-alone option.
A limited number of bursaries for support towards tuition fees have been made available by the CCS for students on this MA programme for 2023 – 24.
Teachers on the programme include Anna Rowlands, Karen Kilby, Paul Murray, Carmody Grey, Rik Van Nieuwenhove, Billy Crozier, and Greg Ryan. Modules available include:
- Catholic Theology: A Preliminary Tour
- Catholic Social Thought
- The Thought of Thomas Aquinas in Context
- Conceiving Change in Contemporary Catholicism
- Twentieth Century Catholic Theology (begins in 2024/5)
- High Medieval Franciscan Theology
- Faith and Reason
The MA is suitable both for those who have studied Theology as undergraduates and for those who have other forms of academic training.
You can find a video about the course with Karen Kilby and Anna Rowlands talking about the programme’s scope, modules and who the programme is intended for here, and full details at MA in Catholic Theology (Distance Learning) – Durham University.
