The Centre for Catholic Studies present an online ISHWRA Seminar, ‘The Leadership of Catholic Women Religious in American Secular Institutions of Higher Education’, led by Dr Peggy Delmas, University of South Alabama.
This event will be held online via Zoom on Wednesday 8 March 2023 from 2.00pm.
That Catholic women’s religious orders were foundational to the education of generations of females in the United States is well-established. What is less known is the history of Catholic sisters who provided leadership to public or secular institutions of higher education, beginning in the late 1960s and continuing today. In this presentation Peggy will share the reasons why this occurred, as well as documenting the ways Catholic sisters made the leap from congregationally run colleges and universities to employment at secular institutions. Additionally, she will focus on the cases of several sisters who held high-level administrative positions or whose ground-breaking research advanced their field of study, specifically highlighting their leadership contributions to the secular institution.
Dr Peggy Delmas is an Assistant Professor in Leadership and Teacher Education at the University of South Alabama. Her research focuses on the intersection of gender and leadership in higher education. She has a passion for sharing the history and contributions of Catholic women religious in secular higher education.
