Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated on 27 January, which is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The theme for this year’s commemorations is ‘Fragility of Freedom’.

The Interreligious Relations Team are most grateful to St Mary’s Catholic School who will host the event and are delighted to welcome Mrs Deanna Van Der Velde as their guest speaker for 2024’s Diocesan Holocaust Commemoration.

Deanna has given outstanding support to the Interreligious Religious Team and to our Diocesan schools for some considerable time. She has offered invaluable information and advice regarding her Jewish faith, which is at the heart of everything she does.

Deanna was born and educated in Newcastle, and after gaining her degree in modern foreign languages, taught in Newcastle schools. She is a member of the United Hebrew Congregation. Deanna is also a Director of Newcastle Council of Faith, and Newcastle, Durham and Northumberland SACRE. She will share ‘Her Mother’s Story’ as part of our annual Holocaust Commemoration. We are very grateful to Deanna, for agreeing to speak during our commemoration.
