Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated on 27th January, which is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The theme for this year’s commemorations is ‘Ordinary People’ which highlights the ordinary people who let genocide happen, those who actively perpetrated genocide, and the ordinary people who were persecuted. It also highlights the ordinary people who went to extreme lengths to help, to rescue, to save those being persecuted.

The Interreligious Relations team are pleased that St Leonard’s Catholic School, Durham will be hosting the commemorations on Wednesday 25 January at 7.00pm.

Our guest speaker for all three commemoration events will be Mrs Noreen Plen. Noreen will be joining us to tell the story of her parents, Jan Kurz-Bernstein and Lola Waksman, and their families, whose lives were changed by the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939. Noreen will be sharing their stories for their memories to endure.

Booking for the Holocaust commemorations is essential, so please book your place here, email: interreligious.relations@diocesehn.org.uk or ring 0191 243 3316.
