The Cleveland Circle of the Newman Association have announced their programme of talks and events for 2024 / 2025.

All talks take place at St Mary’s Cathedral Hall, Middlesbrough TS8 0TW. Light refreshments from 7.30pm for 7.45pm start.

To all members and friend, here are our programme of talks and events for the next season taking us through to February. Wednesday 25 September 2024:

Rt. Rev. Terence Patrick Drainey talk titled, “St John of the Cross: A Journey from Darkness into Light, absence to presence, through the Cross to Resurrection.”

Bishop Terry first spoke to the Newman Circle shortly after his appointment to the diocese. His subject at that time was St Teresa of Avila and her writings on the Christian soul’s journey to God. Juan de Yepes y Álvarez was mentored by and corresponded with St Teresa and is also known for his writings, particularly the Spiritual Canticle written during his imprisonment and torture.

Wednesday 23 October 2024:

Fr Tony Currer talk titled, “The New Translation of Scripture.”

Fr Tony will talk to us about the new Lectionary which includes the scripture readings for Mass and the sacraments and will come into use in Catholic parishes in England and Wales from Advent 2024.

The new Lectionary gives us an opportunity to hear that word with fresh ears as we engage with a text which is intended for public proclamation and reflects up to date biblical scholarship”, Archbishop Emeritus George Stack of Cardiff, Chair of the Department for Christian Life and Worship.

Wednesday 27 November 2024:

Deacon Paul Hargreaves talk titled, “The Permanent Diaconate – Ordained to Serve.

The Ministry of the Permanent Deacon is described by reference to three things; a life of service to the Word, to the Liturgy and to Caritas.

Deacon Paul will talk to us about the differences, and the similarities, between his Ministry in his parish, Our Lady of Walsingham at Stockton, and his Ministry within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service.

Sunday 26 January 2025:

New Year lunch.

Venue: The Parkmore Hotel, 636 Yarm Road, Eaglescliffe TS16 0DH.
Time: 12.30pm for 1.00pm start.

The remaining programme for 2025 is to be confirmed, but may include a talk by Canon Paul Farrar (“Journey to Priesthood”), our AGM in May and a Summer visit in June.
