The College of Preachers have announced a number of workshops being held during 2023 and 2024.

The College of Preachers are a network of preachers drawn together by a shared belief that good preaching matters. Their members come from many different Christian denominations and traditions. We exist to help encourage, equip and refresh preachers in their preaching ministry, through resources, events and training.

Their public events and seminars are open to preachers of all denominations. The list below also includes events run by partner organisations.

Preaching the Parables

Monday 4 December 2023, 2.00pm – online via Zoom
Workshop Leader: Rt Revd Dr John Perumbalath
It is often said that Jesus preached in this way to make his teaching understandable and accessible, but in fact, many of the parables are illogical and confusing. How should we understand the parables and the messages they convey? How are they relevant for the Church’s life today? And how can we preach about them in a way that is faithful to Jesus’ use of parables and engages our listeners, helping them to think in new ways about big issues? This workshop will explore these questions and how we can effectively preach the parables.
Ticket prices: general £10, ministry student £7.

This workshop is for preachers wishing to engage with the questions our secular age raises in relation to preaching the hope of the resurrection. Preparing for Holy Week and Easter provides the fitting, even urgent context, in which teaching and faithfulness to the word of God can be enriched by the fruits of theology and the creative imagination.

Connecting Old Testament & New Testament in Our Preaching

Saturday 20 April 2024, 10.30am – online via Zoom
Workshop leader: Philip Jenson, former lecturer in Old Testament, Ridley Hall, Cambridge
This workshop explores two helpful ways in which preachers can connect the two Testaments and open up how God is at work both in the past and the present: a fresh appreciation of the imagery and archetypes of the Bible and a sophisticated approach to the Grand Narrative of Scripture. The workshop will emphasize interpretation rather than technique, but will include opportunities for dialogue, questions, and practical work on selected texts.
Ticket prices: general £12, ministry student £10.
