On Thursday 26 May 2022 the Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima and Relics of the Ss Jacinta and Francisco visited the parishes of St Mary Magdalen, Seaham Harbour; St Michael, Houghton-le-Spring and St Cuthbert Seaham, at the request of parish priest, Fr Marc Lyden-Smith.

The day started at St Mary Magdalen’s Church in Seaham with the recitation of the holy rosary, led by the pupils of St Bede’s High School, joined by the pupils of St Mary Magdalen’s Primary School.

Following this the statue moved to St Michael’s Church at Houghton-le-Spring. The children from St Michael’s Primary School joined the parish community and the First Holy Communion children led the rosary, followed by a talk given by Fr Marc on the history of Fatima.

The highlight of the day was at St Cuthbert’s in Seaham at 7pm with a very special Mass with the statue and relics for the Solemnity of the Ascension of The Lord. Over 500 people packed into the church to honour our Blessed Mother.

Speaking after the event, Parish Priest and Partnership Dean Fr Marc Lyden Smith commented:

“It was truly a beautiful day for our parish communities, to have such a packed church as we exit the pandemic, to worship together and honour Our Blessed Mother, was a wonderful reminder of who we are as a Catholic community. I’m sure many graces with flow from this wonderful day”.
