Diocesan Statement 12 June 2024:

The Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle takes the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults extremely seriously and operates a zero tolerance approach to abuse.

“We are absolutely committed to vigilance of the highest standards and are greatly encouraged therefore by the observations of the Catholic Safeguarding Standards Agency, which has conducted a follow up Review of safeguarding Standard One in the Diocese, that ‘significant progress’ has been made over the past 12 months and that that a ‘demonstrable positive impact of strong and new safeguarding leadership’ has been seen.

“We look forward to receiving and studying the report in due course and to continuing to implement recommended actions through our agreed Safeguarding Action Plan.
