Prayer Vigils

A prayer vigil for peace in Israel and Gaza is held each Saturday morning from 9.30am to 10.00am outside the Abbey in Hexham. All are welcome to join, even if just for a few minutes. On the last Saturday of each month there are prayers inside the Abbey at the end of the vigil.

Prayers for peace in Gaza and Israel are also offered each Thursday at Our Lady Immaculate and St Cuthbert RC Church, Crook from 7.00 – 7.30pm. All are welcome.

The next Interfaith Prayer vigil will be on Sunday 2 March 2025 at 3.00 – 3.45pm at the barrier to the Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre, Corbridge Road, Medomsley DH8 6QY.

If you cannot attend in person, perhaps you could join us in prayer from home. There is an online version of the vigil on the Diocesan website, which you can find here.

You can download our most recent booklet with the prayers and readings we use here.

The Justice & Peace Co-ordinating Council Annual General Meeting

The Justice and Peace AGM was held on Saturday 8 February and was attended by 34 people.

You can read the minutes from our AGM by clicking on the adjacent button. The minutes include a number of attachments, which are available to view or download at the base of this page.

The Listening from the Heart Programme

A highlight of the AGM was a presentation by Pat Devlin and Jonathan Adams helping us to engage with the materials form the ‘Listening from the Heart‘ programme.

The programme has been developed by the Parents Group – Families Forum, which is made up of Palestinians and Israelis who have lost a child or close family member to inter-communal violence. The group‘s goal is to reduce and eventually eradicate this violence by bringing members of both groups together to promote dialogue, tolerance, reconciliation and finally peace.

The programme materials encourages us all to listen attentively to promote dialogue, tolerance reconciliation and ultimately peace.

The programme has been bought by the Diocese and is now available for up to 10 parishes, or organisations across the Diocese to use.

Please click on the adjacent button for more information and think about how it could be used in your parish, deanery or organisation. Not only does it help us engage more fully with the situation in Israel and Palestine, it also promotes attentive listening and dialogue in our communities

  • Avoid chemicals; use peat free compost
  • Compost garden waste
  • Try growing some vegetables
  • Embrace weeds!
  • Create a bug hotel from logs and garden debris
  • Create a small pond if you have space
  • Put up bird boxes and feed the birds
