Our Lady and St Columba will receive a £20,000 grant from the National Churches Trust to help fund urgent repairs to the roof and buttresses. Not only will this mean that the church can continue to stay open for the local community, but it’s vital heritage will be protected for many years to come.
Many will be familiar with the distinct diocesan building. The mid-20th century landmark is bold and impressive with it’s 1950s design, which infuses Modern Perpendicular Gothic with Scandinavian and Art Deco elements.
When the church was first built, parishioners and their families gave ‘brick money’, making personal sacrifices to ensure their church could be constructed. Today, further local fundraising efforts have generously helped secure the future of this Grade II Listed church.
The grant from the National Churches Trust will help to ensure necessary maintenance work can take place.
Fr David Smith said:
“I see every day the important role our church plays in the lives of people across Wallsend. This grant means a great deal to our church and the wider community, preserving our much-loved church building and ensuring it remains safe, welcoming and accessible for everyone who relies on it. We are deeply grateful for this support, which will help safeguard both our heritage and the vital role St Columba’s plays in the life of our community.”
