Fr John Coyle RIP
It is with sadness we share the news that Fr John Coyle died on 21st September 2026; he was 93 years of age.
Fr John was ordained to the priesthood on 21st July 1957. He has faithfully served the people of our Diocese in the following parishes:
Curate:
Billingham, Holy Rosary: August 1957 – November 1958
Bishop Auckland, November 1958 – June 1959
Gateshead, Holy Rosary (supply): June 1959 – October 1959
Newcastle, St Bede: October 1959 – April 1967
Newcastle, St Lawrence: April 1967 – December 1976
Parish Priest:
Sunderland, St Hilda: December 1976 – April 1998
Washington, St Bede: June 2002 – July 2007
He was appointed Secretary at Bishop’s House from 1959 until 1968 and also Vicar General from January 1996 until December 2004.
Fr John Retired in July 2007.
Fr John’s body will be received into St Charles’ Church, Gosforth on Thursday 22nd October with Mass at 6.30pm.
Bishop Stephen will celebrate Fr John’s Requiem Mass, at St Mary’s Cathedral at 12 noon on Friday 23rd October. His cremation will follow at West Road Crematorium, Newcastle.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen.
